Green Algae: The green algae are large, informal grouping of algae consisting of the Chlorophyte and Charophyte algae, which are now placed in separate Divisions. This common “green” algae that can be free floating or wall clinging. This problem ranges in severity from patches on walls and bottoms, to infecting entire pool. It can also clog filters and create surface damage if left unchecked. Black Algae: Black algae, also called blue-green algae can form in swimming pools, and is evident by the growth of coin-sized black or blue-green spots. These algae formations grow from cracks and crevices of cement or plaster-lined pools, and in shady areas of the pool. Black algae occurs much less in vinyl-lined pools, as there are less imperfections in the pool walls and floor where the black algae can root. Black algae is a very strong type of algae and most serve out of all the algae's, this algae must be properly treated or it will just keep coming back and if left untreated will permanently damage the surface of the pool. Mustard Algae (Yellow): A chlorine-resistant form of green algae. Often resembles dirt or sand on bottom or sides of pool. It can be brushed away very easily, but returns quickly. Although it can create a large chlorine demand, it has been known to survive in high levels of chlorine.
